I've been prescribed the Xanax 2mg and it helped my PTSD..I'm currently on Klonopin 1mg TID and I was considering trying the Xanax XR..r there any significant differences besides the time release? Does it start off stronger than the normal Xanax when it starts to work? What's a good mg to try if you have a high tolerance to anti anxiety meds considering I've been taking them for severe PTSD for almost the past decade....thx

Yes there is a difference.

Xanax XR is typically used as a profolactic (sp) medication. It is by no means a PRN rescue med. It does take a bit longer to work. However if you have a benzodiazepine tolerance, you won't feel it working. That doesn't mean it isn't but it's more of a smoother med that doesn't give you those peaks and valleys with Xanax IR. I will give you some more of my own experience context in a few hours. I am at work.

Hello pain killin A215

Do you mind if I ask what caused your PTSD?  It will affect my answer to you.  I have been prescribed and I have taken over 7 different benzodiazepines, so I hopefully can point you in a good direction.  I am not a doctor, but you can look through my old posts and see that I know a little bit about this area of medication.

All good

I was in a BAD car accident 10yrs ago and I broke my neck a burst fracture C5-C7 I was paralyzed from the neck down pre-op and after almost 12hrs of spinal fusion surgery I came out un-paralyzed by the grace of God!!!! Thats when my PTSD started and in 2011 I was in another accident (I wasn't driving either of the times and I had my seat belt on and no drugs or alcohol were involved) it intensified EVERYTHING my injuries and my PTSD

Am I Prescribed Xanax XR?

Yes, I am and have been going on 6-7 years at the same dose. I went through all the hoops you can think of with anti-depressants, off-label medication, and different benzodiazepine agents. I found that alprazolam was what worked best for me. I have tried most all typical benzodiazepines prescribed for anxiety. All long time ago I reached my psychiatrist's xanax ceiling dose. He asked if I wanted to try the XR version. I did not argue. I was taking 2mg TID (three times a day). The switch to the XR version was a straight switch. 2mg Xanax XR tid. I now get 1-2 tabs of 1mg Xanax XR tid. I can use 1mg instead of 2 if I choose. Usually if you will try to compare 1mg Xanax IR vs Xanax XR, you'll likely find that the obviously the xanax it will work quicker but not let as long as the XR version. 1mg Xr will work longer but it's a bit more subtle. You'll notice this if you have a benzodiazepine tolerance. It works wonderful for me. Remember, to each their own. But to me, it's stood the test of time. I have yet to feel a need to change doses. I suggest giving it a shot if you think alprazolam is the benzodiazepine for you. Good luck. Penny for thoughts.
